Historic Old Northeast

Just north of St. Petersburg’s downtown, the quiet residential nature of Historic Old Northeast offers the perfect respite from downtown’s booming cultural and entertainment scene.

Hexagonal sidewalks

Created in 1911 by the land developers C. Perry Snell and J. C. Hamlett, what is now the Historic Old Northeast is bordered by 5th Avenue North to 30th Avenue North and 4th Street North to Tampa Bay. Built to be the “premier residential neighborhood”, this charming area is known for its brick streets, granite curbs, picket fences, hexagonal sidewalks, Spanish-moss-draped oak trees, lush foliage, and historic homes. The nearly 3,000 historic buildings encompass a wide variety of architectural styles including Mediterranean, Colonial, Tudor, Prairie, and Craftsman Bungalow.

Historic Old Northeast’s eastern boundary is formed by North Shore Park, which is an integral part of the city’s seven-mile network of waterfront parks. St. Petersburg residents and visitors alike are drawn to North Shore Park’s wide-open spaces, swimming, biking, walking, and playing areas as well as its small, picturesque white sand beach. The area also borders Coffee Pot Bay, famous for its resident manatees.

Along Coffee Pot Blvd. you’ll find the Granada Terrace subdivision, which was also developed by Snell. This subdivision is unique in that It all buildings within its borders were required to be built in the Mediterranean style. In 1988, Grenada Terrace was designated as a Local Historic District, and the Historic Old Northeast neighborhood, as a whole, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
